The Importance of Volunteer Staff
South Wind Hospice has over 100 volunteers in 17 counties that we serve. It would be impossible to provide the excellent hospice care that we are known for if it was not for the dedicated, compassionate volunteers we have been blessed with. We are very fortunate to have them on our team.
In 2006, South Wind Hospice Volunteers provided 3,962 hours of care to patients as well as helping in the office and with fundraising and marketing If we had to replace our volunteers with staff hours for 2006, we would have paid over $54,000!
Hospice volunteers are like your favorite good neighbor. They are the ones who know when to give a hug, when to share a joke and a laugh, and when to shed tears. They might bring a casserole, or a plate of cookies, or some fresh fruit.
They know how to listen. They may read aloud from the Bible, or the newspaper, or a novel. They ask about the grandchildren and really want to hear how they are doing. They shop for patients or take patients shopping. They know the right color of fingernail polish. They can run a vacuum and wash a sink full of dishes. Sometimes they just sit and hold a hand or stroke an arm. They are really good at bringing sunshine.
Volunteer positions are available in patient care, at the Hospice Home, at the office and at the Thrift Shop. Contact us for more information.
